Me and Digital Culture (Domžale Secondary School, Social Science teachers, January 2020)

On Thursday, 16 January 2020, at the Domžale Secondary School, a thematic day was held for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students at the High School, entitled Me and Digital Culture.

At the beginning, the students listened to a lecture by Miha Kramli, MD, entitled Joys and pitfalls of new technology. The lecturer is a therapist and head of the Clinic for the Treatment of Non-Chemical Addictions at Policlinic Nova Gorica. He spoke with students about the use and impact of modern technologies on children and adolescents. He pointed out that addiction to the virtual world is becoming a civilizational problem, and gave some tips on how to avoid non-chemical addiction. Afterwards, the students attended two more workshops of their choice, where they discussed phenomena of digital culture in small groups and made an undercover selfie, a newspaper article and magic relaxers.

In the workshop entitled Selfies, Who am I, prepared by Sofia Baškarad, MSc, the word was about what a selfie is, how we see ourselves and how others see us. The workshop Culture of Humiliation – Addressing Cyber-Violence, conducted by the Pride Parade Association, spoke about peer violence. Barbara Debeljak Rus, PhD, conducted a workshop Fear of missing out – characteristics of FOMO syndrome, where they dealt with the fear that we may miss something very important if we do not check our social networks often enough. In the workshop entitled How the media shape stereotypes and prejudices in society, led by Nina Jelić, they learned to recognize some stereotypical, idealized images of femininity and masculinity in media content and ways in which media communication increases prejudices about racial, ethnic and marginal groups. False information and fraud online was a workshop conducted by the Center for Safer Internet Safe.si and where students identified false information and fraud online through theory and in practice.

The students marked the thematic day with the following words: helpful, useful in life, better than school, instructive, okay, well organized, full of new information…
