Teaching democracy (Slovenia, 2021)

The exchange C3 Making democracy took place in Slovenia. Unfortunately, in the time of covid-19, we couldn’t invite our guest in person so we set up an online pupils’ exchange. Based on our experiences, we decided to have only three working days as we expected to have a group of pupils who predominantly don’t go to school but work online. We tried to do an interactive exchange where the pupils would interact and exchange in international teams.

The headmaster opened the exchange; the participants saw some impressions from Slovenia and Domžale. We continued with the interactive lecture on Populism and fake news. Sonja Merljak Zdovec lectured on fake news with some interesting examples. Then we had a virtual guided tour through the local Straw Hat Museum.

The next day, Sofija Baškarad presented aspects of internet in democracy. Andrej Tomšič from Slovenian Commissioner for Data Protection lectured on GDPR. We presented a region and invited participants to an escape room about democracy. On the final day, the guys from Pride parade Association gave a workshop on hate speech. Then, we showed our guests around the school – virtually. Every team presented the corona times in their school. Below you have a short evaluation, based on 22 responses, whereby the Austrian pupils evaluated only the last day since they switched with their schoolmates from day 1 and 2.
